Weekly Email 12-10-10

As I walked up Sixth Avenue I noticed a police officer in full battle gear standing on the corner.  At first like anyone I was like wow what happened - but he was just standing there so I had to get a photo.  Of course I was not about to engage him and ask since his look wasn't a chatty one.  So I just walked by then walked back and snapped one from the side and not to sneak up on him snapped another and said hi - hope things are well.  He looked and that was it. 
Certainly I don't know if you've had the experience of seeing the police in full battle gear but it's a unique feeling.  The machine gun is quite noticeable from a distance and they are covered in other intimidating gear as well.  This is what our safety looks like on the streets.   I can't imagine what would have to happen to be able to use the machine gun in NYC and I certainly don't want to see that.

Flatiron Admiration

To me there is just something special about the flatiron building.  No matter how you slice it - that thing is an amazing site to see.

What a Drunk Can Do

We really could not stop laughing.  We didn't know at first how a friend of ours stumbled out of the party with his pants all a mess.  How the heck did that happen.  Then someone remembered there was a big cookie tray at the party and the colors matched up.  How classic is that???

Night at the Museum

The holiday parties are in full swing in NYC!  One of the nicer spots to have an event is in the American Museum of Natural History.  There is so much to look at while there and of course the "whale room" is a fun experience.
I am pretty sure if i just posted the sea lions without a statement folks may think i saw them on the beach - but this is an exhibit in the oceans room.

Holiday Windows

There are so many amazing window displays to take in around the city.  Two I spotted are at Bergdorf Goodman.  They have some amazingly elaborate displays to take in.

Weekly Email 11-26-10

The experience of seeing the Thanksgiving Day Parade balloons blown up on the upper west side is a unique NYC experience.  The throngs of people really make it hard to enjoy it - regardless - we all show up and push through the masses.  Kids getting lost - strollers clogging up the curb, tourists getting annoyed, folks getting claustrophobic - it's a winning combo!
It reminds me of the nature scenes where the penguins all march in a circle to stay warm through the winter.  The crowds are penned in from 77th St to 81st St with no exits from the area around the Museum of Natural History.
Here are some views of the scene.  Next year enter at 82nd St and do a quick walk on 81st and turn around!

There's something special about eating today.  We all know we had too much - but it sure is fun.

Bathroom Shopping

As I travel to many different wedding and event places it is interesting to see how they all deck out the bathroom.  One recent stop at the Westmount had quite the impressive basket of goodies.   They sure are prepared for any mishap or interest.

Look Both Ways

There's an old photo saying which says when you think you have the best picture in front of you - turn around and look behind you.  One way I saw this come into play is in the simple issue of how light effects the way we see the world.  This scene of a table on Broadway is taken looking south towards the sun and north away from the sun.  That 180 degree switch led to the dynamic change in color!  Something to keep in mind when you are out wandering the world.

Weekly Email 11-19-10

This week I got one last glimpse at some amazing fall colors.  While shooting a bride with Neal we had this tree as an amazing background.  The light was perfect and the images are amazing.  Here I am of course highlighting the tree - but you can also see Maria's reaction when she saw how great she looks!
