Fujifilm X-Pro1 First Night Out

Last night I knew I had to get some shooting in with the X-Pro1 and then it started to snow a bit so my first images are on the street and you can see flakes of snow and rain in the image.  I got the camera home around 6pm, charged the battery and headed out about 9pm.  The street image is a whacky kelvin temp from the overhead light.  I purposely do little to tweak the image - I try to show it out of the camera with little post.

X-Pro1 ISO 3200 F/1.4 @ 1/90th
The noise levels at ISO 3200 look great to me - and of course many people will get to be the judge once the camera is released.  Today is a gorgeous sunny day so I'll have some day shots captured soon.  For now shooting at night at 3200 @ F/1.4 is nice!  Click to enlarge - these are from jpegs processed in Aperture only.
I've added 3 jpegs (full file) of a portrait shot at ISO 500 and F/2.4 with the 60mm (90mm) lens.  Sharpness is great and smooth background.  No photoshop work.

  1. Wow! They look really great! No real visible noise. How does the camera feel? Are you sattisfied with it? I am thinking really hard to replace my Nikon D200 with it (tired of carrying the heavy stuff arround and really pleased with my Fuji X10!)

Agreed, looks nice. And now that the M mount is on its way there may be come decent portrait lenses. Sadly, they're going to cost way more than the camera itself. Sigh--if Samyang, Voigtlander, or Zeiss brought their optics to this system I'd switch. Like Eppoh66 I'm getting tired of the big gear.

Fuji are releasing an m-mount adapter for it next month, so you can get your voigtlander and zeiss fix that way.

The biggest concern I have is whether or not the AF is improved over the x100.

I hope they add focus peaking by the time the M-mount adapter comes out. Magnification viewing would be hard...

I totally agree, and that may end up being a complete deal breaker for me.

Hi Brandon, nice photo's. Impressive performance of the camera.
Very curious about the performance of the camera (autofocus, start-up times, etc.). Can you elaborate on this a bit?

    Thnx!

  6. Brandon, people are asking you questions that they need to know. Of course if you are one of those Fuji's side tricks about creating more buzz about the camera without given away anything real, you do not need to respond. If you are real person who happened to somehow receive the camera, and is still allowed to go out, shoot and post result, be real and let us know something about the camera like a real person. If you allowed you to post images, they should probably allow you to also share how you really feel about the camera, how do you find manual focus that people so much want to know about. If you are just another Fuji Guy in disguise, we get enough from them, do not need one more. Seriously.

  8. Yes - thank you - I am. I'm trying to post what I can that is interesting. It's a no win for me. If I sit here and rave people will just say - WTF he works for the company. If I don't say enough people say I'm hiding something. That's why I think it's best to leave it to the folks out there we all turn to for reviews. I've also only had it for 2 days - hardly enough time to issue edicts on everything.

  9. I say let the photos speak for themselves... And from what I can see, that's some nice Bokeh-liciousness there... Can't wait to get my hands on one!

  10. Hi Brandon, FWIW, Snoorani just plainly came off as a troll, never happy or satisfied, having either not read or failed to grasp the point of your blog and simultaneously carelessly commenting without forethought. Certainly not one I'd invite to a dinner party or social gathering.

For me, your blog has been great and helpful. You continue to be open and honest. BTW, X100 excitement was/is genuine--and backed up by the sales and mostly positive reviews and user feedback. Please continue posting to your blog. Thank you.

  12. Thank you Brandon, Sam and Jim. I apologies. Images you shot and what else is up there certainly makes the point that there is no question about the image quality. There is enough hiding behind such a low profile, yet high tech camera. There are many people, including myself, who are concern whether with such an excellent piece of equipment, Fuji manage to improve manual focus ability. This particular question has been asked several times over, but somehow everyone who have had an opportunity to test the camera so far has avoided answering this particular concern. It would have been great if Fuji has taken care of it, but regardless, X Pro1 has enough going for what it cost. Fuji has set a milestone with entire X line, and it's very much appreciated by thousands who want a reasonable image quality with the weight and looks of full frame SLR. Thank you Brandon. Thank you Fuji and Thank you Jim and Sam.
